● ごあいさつ ●Message from the DirectorごあいさつA Message from the Director Waseda University’s Kagami Memorial Institute for Materials Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as “ZAIKEN”, an abbreviation of its Japanese name) was established in 1938 under the name “Casting Research Institute” as Japan’s first private university research institute for science and engineering. The current name was adopted in 1988 on the 50th anniversary of its foundation. In its early period, the institute’s research concentrated mainly on metallic materials, especially castings, but as time passed, the scope of its research has expanded to include a wide range of materials, including semiconductors, ceramics, and soft matter in addition to metals. ZAIKEN supports research activities by providing researchers both inside and outside of the university with the advanced analytical instruments necessary for materials research. ZAIKEN was selected in 2018 as one of the Joint Usage/Research Centers, whose objective is to develop a system for collaborative research leveraging the research potential of Japan’s universities, by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). ZAIKEN now operates the “Joint Research Center for Environmentally Conscious Technologies in Materials Science.” The center’s activities comprise two categories: joint research with researchers outside the university and joint usage of analytical instruments. This year’s joint research is conducted on processes, structures, and physical properties related to environmentally conscious materials with the keywords “long life,” “4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Replace),” and “energy conservation.” In addition, measurements and tests that can be completed quickly are actively accepted as joint usage applications to provide a wide range of research support. Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily made it difficult for visitors to come to ZAIKEN, many researchers from Japan and abroad now gather here for joint research and joint usage. Today, ZAIKEN, which began as Casting Research Institute, is now one of the Joint Usage/Research Centers, contributing in the materials science field to the development of science and technology of environmentally conscious materials by drawing on the experience and knowledge we have accumulated over the years via supports to domestic and international research as well as promotion of joint research with external researchers. We hope you will continue to provide guidance and support for our activities.Yoshiyuki Sugahara27th Director of the Kagami Memorial Research Institute for Materials Science and Technology, Waseda University2早稲田大学 各務記念材料技術研究所（以下、材研）は、日本で初めて設立された私立大学の理工系附置研究所として、1938年に「鋳物研究所」として開設され、1988年の創立50周年を機に現在の名称に変更されました。開所時は鋳物を中心とした金属材料を中心に研究を展開してきましたが、次第に他の材料にも展開していき、現在では金属に加えて半導体、セラミックス、さらにソフトマターまで多彩な材料を研究対象としております。材研は、所有する材料研究用の高性能分析装置を用いて学内外の研究を支援してきました。特に、2018年には、大学の研究ポテンシャルを活用し、研究者が共同で研究を行う体制を整備することを目的とした、文部科学省の共同利用・共同研究拠点（以下、共共拠点）に認定されました。材研は「環境整合材料基盤技術共同研究拠点」として、学外の研究者との共同研究や分析装置の共同利用に積極的に取り組んでおります。環境整合材料基盤技術共同研究拠点では、共同研究と共同利用を二本の柱としております。本年度の共同研究では、「長寿命化」「4Ｒ（Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace）」「省エネルギー」を基本キーワードとして、環境整合材料に関する「プロセス」「構造」もしくは「物性」に関する共同研究を採択しております。また、１回の測定が１日から数日で終わるような短期の単独の測定・試験は「共同利用」として積極的に受け入れております。コロナ禍では来所が難しい状況が続きましたが、現在は国内外から多くの研究者が共同研究や装置の利用のために来所しています。詳細は材研のホームページやパンフレットをご覧いただき、ご興味がございましたら、事務局までお問合せください。鋳物研究所としてスタートした材研ですが、現在は共共拠点の１つとして国内外の研究を支援するとともに、所外との共同研究を推進することで、材研が培ってきた蓄積を活かしながら、材料科学の分野において環境整合材料の科学・技術の発展に寄与して参りたいと存じます。引き続き皆様のご指導、ご鞭撻をよろしくお願い申し上げます。早稲田大学各務記念材料技術研究所第27代所長 菅原 義之
