*The university’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering offersa “Special Selection System for Working Individuals,” under which aparticipant may be admitted as a graduate student without the need toleave his/her employment. This system may also apply if a researcherat the Institute holds a concurrent post at the Graduate school.Contract Training System　　The Contract Training System provides guidance in research and technology to mid-career engineers on the basis of a contract with governmental organizations or private companies. Participants should have an educational background beyond high school, plus more than three years of practical technical experience. The course consists of laboratory work, research, and seminars. The researcher appointed by the Institute assigns the subjects for laboratory work and research pertaining to the field requested by the trainee. The trainee may participate in seminars conducted by the researcher in charge. The course begins in April, and applications are accepted up until about March 10 each year.Contract Research System　　The Contract Research System is designed for engineers and researchers who are active in their field and have a scientific and technical background higher than that required for participants in the contract Training system described above. It offers a place and opportunity for the participants to enhance their level of scientific and engineering research, to build on their existing abilities, and to prepare to acquire a doctoral degree. Qualifications required for admission include a bachelor’s degree from the science or engineering department of a university or college or an equivalent level of education. Research carried out by the participating individual is conducted in the relevant field under the supervision of a professor selected by the participant.　　The contract research participant may attend seminars conducted by the professor, as well as lectures at the School of Science and Engineering and at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering*. Tuition will be charged to the participant.Research Encouragement System　　The Institute has a research-education fund established with donations from philanthropists and retired members of its research staff. It is used to provide financial support, in the form of research incentives, to young researchers at the Institute.Publications　　The results of research carried out by members of the research staff are published in various technical society journals. The Institute also publishes Zaiken Hôkoku (in Japanese) and publicizes its research activities once a year.　　ZAIKEN TODAY, which describes the activities and results of the Institute in newsletter format, is published twice a year.Research Meetings　　To promote scientific and technical exchanges among specialists from both inside and outside the Institute, research meetings are held in the Institute at suitable times. They take a variety of forms, and include lectures and presentations of research results by speakers from both inside and outside the university, as well as by students.7受託研修者制度　官公庁・会社等の委託にもとづいて、中堅技術者の研究および技術の指導を行う制度である。主として、高等学校卒業以上の学歴を有し、実務経験３年以上の者を対象としている。授業は実験・研究およびゼミからなり、実験・研究は研修者の希望する部門について、当研究所が指定する研究員が実験・研究の課題を与え指導する。ゼミは、当該研究員が開講するものへの参加が認められる。毎年４月に開講し、３月10日頃まで随時、申し込みを受け付けている。受託研究者制度　上記の受託研修者より更に高い学識経験を有する現職技術者・研究者のために、科学・技術研究の高度化、能力再開発、あるいは学位取得の準備などを行う場と機会を提供する制度である。入所資格として、理工科系大学を卒業した者、またはそれに準ずる学力があることが求められる。受託研究者の研究は、希望する指導教授のもとでそれぞれの分野について行われる。　受託研究者は、指導教授が開講するゼミへの参加のほかに、理工学部、大学院理工学研究科の聴講もできる（注）が、聴講料は別途徴収となる。（注）本学大学院理工学研究科には、企業等に在籍のまま正規の大学院生となることのできる「社会人特別選考制度」が設けられており、当研究所の研究員が同研究科の兼任である場合には、同制度の適用を受けられることがある。研究奨励生制度　当研究所では、篤志家、退任の研究員等よりの寄付金を基に、研究教育基金が設けられている。毎年その果実を利用して、研究所の若手研究者に研究奨励金を支給し、経済的支援を行っている。刊行物　研究員の研究成果は、各種の関係学会誌等に発表されている。当研究所では研究所全体の活動状況を明らかにするため、機関誌「材研報告」を刊行し、年一回研究成果を公表している。　また、ニューズレターの形式で研究所の活動や成果を紹介する「ZAIKEN TODAY」も年二回刊行している。研究会　所内外の学術的・技術的交流を目的として、当研究所内において随時研究会を開催している。学外・学内講師による講演会、報告、学生の研究発表など、内容は多彩である。
